Onsite Server Expert

OnSite Server Expert

Having an on-site server is still the right solution for a lot of our customers as it manages all of their logons/data/file permissions and crucially their software. If bought with the right specification a server can work reliably and efficiently for 5-7 years and this is a very cost effective way of running your network.

ADVANTAGES

  • Enhanced Control: With an onsite server, businesses have complete control over their data and infrastructure. They can customize the server configuration and security settings to meet their specific requirements. This control allows for greater flexibility in managing and optimizing the server’s performance according to the organization’s needs.
  • Improved Security: Onsite servers provide an added layer of security since data is stored within the organization’s premises. This reduces the risk of unauthorized access and data breaches that could occur with cloud-based servers. Businesses can implement robust security measures, such as firewalls, encryption, and access controls, to protect sensitive information.
  • Faster Data Access: Local servers offer faster data access speeds compared to cloud-based servers. Since the server is physically located within the organization’s premises, the data transfer and retrieval times are minimized, resulting in quicker access to critical information and improved productivity.
  • Network Performance: An onsite server allows businesses to have direct control over their network infrastructure. They can optimize network configurations, bandwidth allocation, and prioritize data traffic, leading to improved network performance and reduced latency. This is particularly beneficial for applications or services that require low latency, such as real-time collaboration tools or database access.
  • Compliance and Data Governance: In certain industries or regions, compliance with data governance regulations and legal requirements is crucial. By having an onsite server, businesses can ensure that they have complete visibility and control over their data, facilitating compliance with relevant regulations and industry standards.
  • Cost Efficiency: Depending on the scale and requirements of the business, an onsite server can be cost-effective in the long run. While the initial setup costs may be higher compared to cloud-based solutions, ongoing monthly fees associated with cloud services can add up over time. By investing in an onsite server, businesses can avoid recurring expenses and have greater control over their IT budget.
  • Offline Access: In situations where internet connectivity may be limited or unreliable, having an onsite server enables employees to access critical applications and data even when offline. This can be beneficial in remote locations or during temporary disruptions in internet services.
  • Scalability and Customization: Onsite servers provide businesses with the flexibility to scale their infrastructure according to their growth and requirements. They can easily add or upgrade hardware components, storage capacity, or processing power to accommodate increasing data volumes or expanding operations. Additionally, businesses have the freedom to customize the server environment to fit their specific software applications and workflows.

Pros and Cons of Cloud Servers vs Onsite Servers 2024

Onsite servers are housed in a company’s office, either in a server closet or at an on-premise data center. These servers can come in two forms – physical and virtual. Physical servers only run one operating system, while a virtual server can run multiple operating systems using software like VMware or Microsoft Hyper-V.

Pros of Onsite Servers

  • Location. Some businesses prefer to have their data stored onsite to keep critical data in-house. Having data stored onsite also means your business will have access to the server hardware to oversee maintenance and upgrades.
  • Access. Onsite servers don’t require an internet connection to access your data. In the event that your internet connection goes down, employees can still access key files and work offline.
  • Fixed-costs. Onsite servers do require the upfront cost to purchase hardware and software. But, this is typically paid off within a few years and does not require a monthly subscription fee.

Cons of Onsite Servers

  • Upfront cost. Onsite servers typically come with a hefty upfront cost to purchase the servers and licensing for virtualization software. Three or four physical servers can cost $10,000 or more, budgets.
  • Maintenance. If your servers are stored on-premise, it is your responsibility to maintain the hardware, software and server racks. This is a big responsibility, and companies must have adequate internal IT staff to manage it.
  • Limited storage. You can add more disk space, memory and processing, but once you maximize the physical hosts’ resources, you will need to purchase hardware to accompany your growing needs.

Cons of Cloud-Servers

  • Ongoing costs. Eventually, you will pay off your onsite servers. However, cloud-based servers require an ongoing subscription you must pay for the lifetime of your agreement.
  • Price increases. While cloud-based servers offer the scalability needed to grow your data storage needs, this comes at a cost. The more storage you need, the higher the cost will be. This can be troublesome for companies with a tight IT budget.
  • Reliance on internet. Because cloud-based servers are hosted online, if your internet or your provider’s internet go down, you won’t have access to any of your information.

Managed Hosted Servers - VPS and MDS solutions.

Different technologies have different methods to provide service and each has its own advantages.

Cloud Service

A cloud service, sometimes known as Software as a Service, is basically a hosted service that’s accessible over the Internet and designed to be highly available and stable – a subset of hosted services. All our cloud services are designed to be distributed across both Sydney and Melbourne, for maximum business continuity. Our cloud services such as our Exchange email hosting and our VOIP PBX can be considered ‘authentic’ cloud solutions.

Hosted Service

Hosted services allow you to enjoy the benefits of your existing business applications and re-locate them into the cloud. This allows you to leverage the benefits of Nexus One’s cloud infrastructure, with minimal cost and very little disruption to your existing business processes.

By hosting your services in the cloud with Nexus One you get far more resiliency through our fully redundant connectivity and power. While the fact your business applications “always accessible” means our team of highly-skilled engineers can always rapidly respond to any issues, getting your business back on track fast.

VPS (Virtual Private Server)

A VPS – or virtual dedicated server (VDS) is completely isolated in secure environments, running on the same physical hardware as other virtual servers. Allowing your business to maintain full control over the system and not be impacted by others, giving you the ability to customise your private cloud solutions.

Modern server hardware is so powerful that it is often heavily underutilised, so by carefully allocating resources we are able to give our customers the best performance whilst still keeping hosting prices affordable.

MDS (Managed Dedicated Server)

A dedicated server means that you are the only company on the hardware granting your company a 1:1 contention ratio and direct access to the full potential of the hardware. This also allows greater flexibility, allowing Nexus One to develop more secure and powerful hosting solutions for your business that comes with full physical access to hardware.
